Chiropractor for neck pain

What a chiropractor can and can't do for neck pain, warning signs that need a medical doctor, and questions to ask before you book.

What the evidence says

NCCIH notes that spinal manipulation and mobilization have been studied for neck pain, and that evidence is less clear than for low back pain (NCCIH). Neck manipulation carries a rare but serious risk of injury to the arteries in the neck, so ask the chiropractor what technique they plan to use and whether gentler options exist.

See a medical doctor or call 911 first if you have:

A sudden severe headache, dizziness, double vision, trouble speaking or swallowing, or weakness in the arms. These can signal a stroke: call 911.

What happens at the first visit

Expect a health history, a physical exam focused on your spine and joints, and a discussion of a treatment plan. X-rays aren't needed for most people with uncomplicated pain. Ask why if they're recommended.
